Questions about Mexico:
1. Which European airlines operate between Germany and Mexico?
Direct flight:
Lufthansa,
Mexicana,
LTU (Cancún),
Condor (Cancún)
Flight with stopvover:
Air France,
British Airways,
Iberia,
KLM
2. Is it safe to travel Mexico by rental car?
You can travel Mexico by rental car without any problems. However prior to your trip you should make yourself familiar with the traffic regulations. Besides it is not advisable to start your roundtrip in Mexico City. The Mexican manner of driving needs getting used to and often signposting leaves much to be desired. So the best thing to do is to forget all European rules and regulations and to adapt yourself to the local practice of driving. To a large extent, the roads are in a good condition and if you choose the chargeable highway, you almost feel like being on a European street. Pay attention to the speed limit! The highway patrol is often hidden at the roadside and it can get pretty expensive.
3. Can I use my EU driving licence in Mexico?
We recommend to our European clients to apply for an international driving licence. Even if during a normal patrol the European driving licence will be accepted without any problems, it might be possible in case of an accident that the contracted insurance does not accept it or does not cover the damage. Be careful, as this is a typical tourist trap.
4. Is Mexico a safe holiday destination?
Mexico is a safe holiday destination as long as you stick to certain rules. It is not necessary to mention that people who drape themselves with gold jewellery and take their expensive Prada bag for a walk are an easy pray for every thief. Like in every other country in the world you should always be careful and take some precautions like not lingering in dark lanes, not picking up hitchhikers and to keep copies of your passport and all other important documents in the hotel safe. That saves you from a lot of trouble in a worst case situation. Last but not least you can always refer to your embassy for further information about your specific destination.
5. Are there areas that are better to be avoided?
There are certain areas that are better to be refrained from! If you are bound for Mexico City, it is very likely to get lost and suddenly you find yourself in a part of the city that should better be known from TV only. Therefore you should secure yourself with good maps. Much as you'd like to explore the other side of Mexico: please not in Mexico City! Apart from that, let your common sense prevail; as European you feel pretty quickly if it might be better to turn around.
6. Do I need special immunization?
We recommend to get immunized against diphtheria, tetanus as well as against hepatitis A and B. During the rainy season from May to October there is an increased risk of malaria.
7. Is it safe for women to travel by themselves?
As we do already live in Mexico for longer than 7 years and have traveled a lot more than one time all alone, we can say with good conscience: yes! The people are very respectful, even if there is a lot of wolf-whistling if a handsome foreign woman crosses the street. Nevertheless it is not advisable to experience the night life on your own, to explore lonely, desolated spots or to hitchhike. Moreover you should not provoke with your appearance if you want to be left in peace, extremely short skirts and belly tops should be preserved for the beach. Mexico is a country with Latin spirit and mindset and these are more passionate than in many parts of Europe! Keep this in mind and there'll be nothing to worry about!
8. Does my mobile phone work in Mexico?
It does, as long as it is a triband mobile phone. If you are planning on making phone calls within Mexico we advise you to buy a prepaid card in order to avoid high charges for phone calls to other parts of the world.
9. Can I go by taxi without any fear?
As a tourist it is recommendable to order one of the notorios radio taxis and not to hail a taxi on the road, especially not in Mexico City. In every other city there is in fact nothing to worry about. Radio taxis have steady rates and the central office knows where the driver is heading to. You can feel absolutely secure.
10. Is tipping a must? If yes how much?
Tipping is, just like in every other country in the world no obligation. If you were not satisfied with the service, don't do it. However it might happen that you will be asked about it. Often the service staff lives on the tip, so a certain generosity, especially as a tourist, is expected. 10% is common, this is what usually every Mexican gives, too.
11. Is it recommendable to do a roundtrip with children?
Mexico is an absolutely child-friendly country and the kids' well-being has top priority. In many restaurants you'll find a huge kids' corner, if not even a trampoline and clowns that are engaged to entertain and to amuse. But keep in mind that roundtrips usually come along with great distances that have to be covered and even if the means of transportation are quite comfortable and uncomplicated, boredom won't be easy to avoid.
