Copper Canyon Extreme – Tour Module

On this Mexico Tour Module you will experience Mexico’s copper canyon with lots of action and activities. During your train journey, you visit a.o. a Mennonite village and the Cusarare waterfall, fly the world’s largest zip line over the Parque de Aventuras Barrancas and go kayaking on the El Fuerte river.

Day 1
Mexico City – Chihuahua

Depending on your departure time you will be picked up today at your hotel and taken to Mexico City International Airport. Your flight to Chihuahua is waiting for you. Upon arrival in Chihuahua, you will be picked up at the airport and taken to your hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: none)

Day 2
Chihuahua – Mennoniten-Dorf – Creel

Today you will be picked up early in the morning and you head to Creel, a small lumberjack town. On the way, stop in a small Mennonite village. Here you can learn more about the unique lifestyle of the residents. A visit to the Mennonite Museum gives you more insight into the history of this society. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get to know a family better and to try the home-grown products. Then it goes on to Creel. After a short rest, you start a tour on which you get to know the beautiful Lake Areko and in the Valle de los Hongos y de las Ranas you can admire impressive rock formations in the shape of mushrooms and frogs. Then visit the small Jesuit village of San Ignacio with the mission church of the same name and an inhabited Tarahumara cave dwelling. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast on the train)

Day 3
Creel – Cusarare – Barrancas

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel and set off for the beautiful Cusarare waterfall. After a short hike you have reached it and have the opportunity to admire the waterfall from below as well as from above. The Cusarare has a height of approx. 30 m, which you can easily climb. In the summer months (June – September) the waterfall is particularly beautiful and the crystal-clear water invites you to a short refreshment. You will then be taken to the train station. From here you continue with the “Chepe” to Divisadero, where you will arrive around 13:15 pm. In the afternoon you start from the hotel for a guided tour of the canyon, lasting around two hours. On this tour you can enjoy incredible views and learn more about the lifestyle of the legendary Tarahumara Indians, who are also at home here. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 4
Barrancas & Divisadero – El Fuerte

Today you spend completely in the “Parque de Aventuras Barrancas”. First you hike to the viewing platform “Piedra Volada”. From here you “fly” over 7 zip lines a total of 5,000 m from platform to platform. It is even said to be the largest zip line in Latin America. Depending on the weight, a speed of 65-95 km / h can be achieved. Fly through the air and enjoy the breathtaking view of the mountains in front of and below you. In total you cover a height difference of 200 m. Once you arrive at the last station of the zip line, you start a leisurely 2-hour hike (round trip) along the canyon “La Urique”. Your destination is the small community Wakajipare. After the tour of the village, it goes back to the starting point of the zipline. There you have lunch (included) before you continue by train to El Fuerte. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner)

OR

Alternatively, you can climb a via ferrata in Barrancas. Absolutely secured, you cross wooden suspension bridges, abseil off rocks and hike along the rock walls via a few platforms set into the rock. You shouldn’t be afraid of heights, because all activities take place at a vertiginous height. Afterwards, you start a leisurely 2-hour hike (round trip) along the canyon “La Urique”. Your destination is the small community Wakajipare. After the tour of the village, it goes back to the starting point. There you have lunch (included) before you continue by train to El Fuerte. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 5
El Fuerte – Los Mochis

After breakfast you start early for the community of Ocolome. Here you will start an approximately 3-hour kayak tour through the river El Fuerte. Your route takes you through a bird sanctuary with 60 different bird species. The kayak tour ends with an admiration of ancient rock paintings. From here you will be taken to the port of Topolobampo, the bus station or to the airport of Los Mochis, depending on the further itinerary. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

  • Traveling in small groups: Please note that day tours in small groups require some patience, flexibility and understanding, because each group has its own dynamic. The group may also stop at souvenir shops and markets.
  • We reserve the right to make any changes to the itinerary, as long as they are insignificant for the entire travel planning.
  • This journey through the copper canyon is an absolute individual journey and requires a lot of initiative. All excursions are included, but are organized on site by the respective hotels and take place with local guides. They often speak very poor English and are responsible for giving a small impression and organizing the transport.
  • The CHEPE is usually on time, especially when it leaves Chihuahua and Los Mochis at 6 a.m. It only stops for the boarding and disembarking of the train guests, the name of the stops is given by the train staff about 10 minutes before arrival. Stopping times are usually ignored. Even at the stop in Divisadero Barrancas, we kindly ask you to clarify the 15-minute stay with your train staff. If you are within the copper canyons and continue with the CHEPE, please pay careful attention to the times and instructions of the hoteliers and staff at the respective train stations.
  • CHEPE tickets are non-refundable and cannot be changed. In this case, Buenos Días México only acts as a travel agent and assumes no responsibility for delays or cancellations on the part of the railway company.
