Arrival in Mexico City

According to your time of arrival you are picked up from the airport in Mexico City and brought to your hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: none)

Tag 2

City Tour & Anthropological Museum

After breakfast you are taken on a city tour. Stroll the beautiful historic center of this metropolitan capital and visit the impressive Zocalo with its famous Cathedral as well as the Government Palace with its impressive murals by Diego Riviera, amongst others. To make the city tour perfect, it finishes with an informative visit of the Anthropological Museum which is situated on the brink of the Chapultepec Park. Learn about the interesting history and culture of Mexico´s many pre-Hispanic civilizations. Afterwards you are brought back to your hotel. In the afternoon you have the chance to explore Mexico City on your own. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Pyramids of Teotihuacán, Bernal & Querétaro

Today you are off towards the impressive archeological site of Teotihuacán that is situated about 65 kilometers away from the city. It is the largest city of ruins in Latin America covering 22km² and a large portion is still yet to be excavated. You definitely should not miss out on climbing up the Sun and Moon Pyramids, as they provide an imposing view of the „City of the Gods“. Afterwards continue to the charming colonial town of Bernal where you will climb the third largest monolith in the world behind Ayers Rock and Sugarloaf Mountain. Tour the peaceful town before continuing on to Queretaro. Explore the cobblestone streets of the historic center and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere in one of the many beautiful plazas of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight stay. Queretaro – Toluca

After breakfast, enjoy a guided walking tour of the historic center of Querétaro, one of the colonial highlights Mexico has to offer. Visit the beautiful Plaza de la Independencia, the Convento de la Cruz, the famous aqueduct and the immaculately preserved Casa de la Marquesa. Afterwards, continue to Toluca. Get a good night’s rest before the hiking portion of your trip begins. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Climb the volcano Nevado de Toluca

After breakfast you will get to know your Certified Mountain Guide who will accompany you on all of the volcano tours. Approximately 22 km from Toluca is the 4,680m high Nevado de Toluca volcano which is also called Xinantecatl. Once you have reached the Nevada de Toluca base camp you will begin your ascent of approximately 600 meters. After about 3-4 hours of hiking you will reach the summit and be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. With a little luck you can even see the nearby volcano Popcatepetl in the distance. Explore the unique landscape of the volcanoes summit and relax in the warm sunshine before beginning your descent. Afterwards you be transferred to your hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Tlaxcala – Basecamp Volcano La Malinche

After breakfast you will visit Tlaxcala, the capital city of the smallest Mexican state. Explore this quaint colonial town and admire the beautiful architecture and colonial atmosphere. Here you will enjoy a delicious lunch before continuing on to La Malinche base camp where you will take a short 3-4 hour hike in order to allow your body to aclimatize to the high altitudes of the region. This volcano has been inactive for around 3,100 years and was named for the Indigenous mistress and interpreter for the Spanish conqueror Herman Cortez. Get a good nights rest the tranquil environment of your rustic mountain cabin in preparation for tomorrow´s summit. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel + Lunch in Tlaxcala)

Tag 7

Climb Volcano La Malinche

Today starts very early to take advantage of the cool morning weather and the 1450m of altitude needed to climb to the summit. After approximately 4-5 hours of hiking you will reach the summit and be rewarded by a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. At 4,500m above sea level La Malinche is the fifth highest peak in Mexico and on a clear day you can see the surrounding volcanoes such as Popcatepetl, Iztaccihuatl, Pico de Orizaba. After sufficient time to rest and explore the summit you will begin your descent back to the base camp cabins. Overnight stay. Book at a surcharge of 30 EUR your overnight stay in a Comfort-Hotel in Tlaxcala. (Meals: Breakfast in the Cabañas)

Basecamp Altzomoni – Iztaccihuatl

Take the morning off to relax and recover from the previous day’s effort. After breakfast you will be taken to Altzomoni which is the base camp to the Iztaccihuatl volcano. In the afternoon explore the region on a short hike while admiring the local vegetation and once again allowing your body to acclimatize to the altitudes. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Hike Iztaccihuatl to „Tercer Portillo“

Today you will have another acclimatization hike to get used to the altitude and to reach the last base camp called the “Tercer Portillo”. The hike is approximately 6 hours and you will climb 500m in altitude. The base camp is located at an altitude of 4,500 m where you can relax in the quiet and peaceful environment of the mountain. Afterwards you go back to basecamp Altzomoni, where you enjoy a light dinner and spend the night again. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast and lunch at the Camp)

Tag 10

Climb the Iztaccihuatl Volcano

Today starts early and at 03:00 you will begin your hike to the summit of the Iztaccihuatl volcano which is the third largest volcano in Mexico at 5286m. According to Aztec legend the two volcanoes (Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl) are two lovers whose love ended tragically and the Iztaccihuatl is known as the “sleeping woman”. After an arduous hike all of your effort will be rewarded with the spectacular views from the snow covered peak of this dormant volcano. Enjoy a long break where you will have lunch and time to explore the summit. Afterwards make your way back down to Amecameca which is an important base camp for hikers and climbers. Overnight stay. (Meals: Lunch on the tour + dinner at the hotel)

Puebla & Cholula

After breakfast you will visit Puebla, a city with colonial charm, full of history and famous for its location in the middle of four volcanoes. On the way, you will visit the colourful Temple Santa María Tonantzintla with its beautifully intricate façade and afterwards the famous pyramid of Cholula. In Puebla itself, take part in a city tour, during which you will see all the important sites and landmarks the city has to offer. Puebla is also famous for its regional delicacies. Make sure to try the delicious chile en nogada or mole poblana for an authentic taste of Puebla. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Tlachichuca – Basecamp „Piedra Grande“ Pico de Orizaba

After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the small village of Tlachichuca. Here you will spend the night in a mountain cabin at Piedra Grande which is located at the foot of the volcano at an altitude of about 4200 m. Enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel + dinner at basecamp)

Hike „Cruces de Monterrey“

In order to be perfectly prepared to the ascent of the Pico de Orizaba you will spend the day hiking in the area and acclimatizing your body to the high altitudes of the region. Explore the pristine nature and let your lungs get used to the conditions in preparation for tomorrow’s adventure. Your acclimatization hike leads you to the area of the „Cruces of Monterrey“, which have an altitude of 4,800 m. Afterwards you return to your mountain cabin at the piedra grande. Get a good night’s sleep in the tranquility of the mountain environment and save your energy for the ascent. Overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast + dinner at basecamp)

Tag 18

Almighty Pico de Orizaba – Climb the highest peak of Mexico!

Today you get up very early in the morning, because a big adventure is awaiting you! After a hearty breakfast on you will climb Mexico’s highest volcano and at the same time its highest mountain. The volcano has been dormant for over one hundred years, yet its snow covered peak and sheer size is overwhelming. Throughout your hike enjoy the beautiful views of the valley below and after several hours you will reach the top. Once at the summit explore the unique topography of the volcano’s asymmetrical crater and the glaciers found on the Northern edge. After resting on the summit it is time to make your descent down and afterwards you will be brought to Huamantla where you spend the night in the beautiful Hacienda Soltepec. (Meals: Breakfast + lunch on the tour)

Tag 16

Day of departure

After breakfast you will return to Mexico City and arrive around 13:00 where, depending on the rest of your vacation, you will be taken to your hotel, the bus station or the airport. (Meals: Breakfast in the hotel)

Important advice:

  • Please note that all hotels and services are subject to availability until a booking is confirmed.
  • All of the hotels will be booked in a country specific category which does not always correspond to the international standard. Please note that there is no official hotel certification system in Mexico
  • If the aforementioned hotels are fully booked or overbooked, Buenos Dias Mexico reserves the right to replace them with equivalent hotels.
  • The accommodation in the base camps of the volcanos is mostly in shared rooms and the camps are equipped very simple. They only serve as accommodation for the overnight stay and do not offer any comfort or luxury.
  • Meals during the hikes are packet lunches mostly consisting of fruit and energie bars.
  • This Mexico Active Trip requires very good physical condition. The level of difficulty is considered „high“ with hiking and climbing experience being a requirement
  • According to climate conditions the experienced mountain guides are authorized to change or replace activities if the local weather represents a threat to your safety. In this case the activities are not refundable.
