Mexico Transportation

TRANSPORTE
Mexico is a very large country but you shouldn’t worry about the distances. The bus network is very well established and you will be surprised how luxury and comfortable the first-class busses are. They provide a large legroom and there is always a toilet. A lot of provider even distribute snacks and drinks. During the journey they show mostly international movies in English or Spanish. You get the tickets at the bus stations and you also can get an online reservation. There are bus stations in every bigger city but mostly not close to the center wherefore you should plan to have to take a taxi to your hotel. The second-class busses are a bit cheaper but mostly provide a similar service. For both classes we recommend to take warm clothing with you. The air conditions gets mostly very cool. The most common bus lines are Primera Plus, ADO, Estrella Blanca.

For long distances the most comfortable and fast mean of transport is of course the airplane. Domestic flights are comparatively cheap, comfortable and modern. The most common airlines are Aviacsa, Mexicana and Aeroméxico.

To travel by train is not quite common in Mexico. Except of two trains which are especially established for tourists there is only use for trains in the cargo sector. One of them drives in the Copper Canyon from Los Mochis to Chihuahua and the other is the Tequilaexpress going from Guadalajara to Amititan including a taste of tequila and a visit of the home city of the famous drink.

Who wants to hire a rental car should be aware that the Mexican traffic is especially in major cities quite dangerous and needs a lot of concentration and a good ability driving. But on the other hand it’s a good possibility to get to know the country individually. For your own safety you should get informed about the concequences of an accident in Mexico. We recommend a fully comprehensive cover. The legal age to drive a car is 21 in Mexico and an European drivers license is sufficient. The streets and highways are from good quality and road holes are rare and mostly in side roads. Never the less you should always be careful and be over all aware of the "Topes" which are there to regulate the speed and not easy to see. If you use toll roads you have to pay at the "Casetas" a certain amount which varies depending on the area. The toll ticket also means you are insured for the following way if something happens caused by the bad condition of the road. That’s why you should keep the ticket in every case.
