CHECKLIST FOR YOUR TRIP TO MEXICO

With this checklist we want to make it easier for you to prepare for your trip to Mexico. Not all points will be relevant for you, but you can orient yourself accordingly.

Don´t worry, even if you have forgotten something or could not do it in time, most things can still be organized in Mexico.

Prior to travel:

  • Check international health insurance
  • Make important payments
  • Check credit card availability
  • Ask your local bank about the conditions for withdrawals abroad
    (debit and credit card)
  • Check the validity of your passport (minimum validity of 6
    months upon entry)
  • Make copies of passports, tickets, driver’s license, credit
    card etc.
  • Take copies with you and deposit them with someone you trust or with us. Another option is to scan your documents and save them in your email account so that you can access to them at any time.
  • Check with your cellphone service provider about roaming charges for Mexico.
  • Check your airline’s policy on the size and number of bags.
  • Research customs guidelines.
  • Inquire about entry requirements.
  • Consult a doctor and refill prescribed medication if necessary.
  • Make a telephone list for you and for those who stayed at home
    (hotels, airline, Buenos Dias Mexico, bank for blocking debit and credit cards)

Prepare your household:

  • Secure accommodation and food for your pets.
  • Organize watering house plants.
  • Activate the answering machine or call forwarding or change it accordingly.
  • Use or distribute perishable food (refrigerator, fruit).
  • Organize the emptying of your mailbox or have it collected at the post office.
  • Store apartment keys.
  • Store car key.

Documents & means of payment:

  • Travel documents (tickets, vouchers, travelers checks, etc.).
  • Driver´s license.
  • Valid passport (6 months upon entry).
  • Travel health insurance documents.
  • Credit card – Always keep your PIN and phone numbers for blocking separately!
  • Debit card – Always keep your PIN and phone numbers for blocking separately!
  • Cash (preferably exchange dollars / pounds for Mexican pesos MXN at the airport upon arrival).
  • Wallet.
  • Copies of all documents (keep them separately).
  • Vaccination card, diabetic ID, emergency ID.
  • Travel guide (we recommend Lonely Planet).
  • Dictionary.
  • Print itinerary.
  • Print out hotel, tour and transfer vouchers.
  • Print out bus tickets, ferry tickets and flight confirmations.
  • Save the telephone number of your Buenos Dias Mexico contact person.

Suitcases and travel bags:

  • Lockable luggage.
  • Suitcase signs with the first hotel address in Mexico and a contact number.
  • Small backpack for short hikes and excursions.
  • Purse.

Electronic devices and cameras:

  • Sufficient storage media (mass storage, USB sticks, film).
  • Replacement batteries.
  • Adapter for flat sockets (110 V).
  • Camera accessories (interchangeable lenses, tripod, filter, brush, cleaning cloth for lenses, etc.).
  • If necessary, waterproof camera (a well-closing plastic bag is often sufficient as a splash guard for boat tours).
  • If necessary, underwater camera for snorkeling trips.
  • Electronic devices and headphones.
  • Laptop (for new laptops, please leave proof of purchase at home).
  • Mobile phone.
  • Storage media.
  • Electronic media chargers.

Clothes and shoes:

  • Underwear.
  • T-shirts or polo shirts.
  • Shirts / blouses.
  • Jacket.
  • Pullover.
  • Rain protection (e.g. for boat tours).
  • Stockings / socks.
  • Long and short pants.
  • Skirts.
  • Swimsuit, bikini, swim trunks.
  • Pajamas.
  • Warm clothes / scarfs for cool evenings and restaurants with strong air conditioning.
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Sturdy ankle-high footwear for active tours.
  • Waterproof sandals / water shoes.
  • Sneakers.

Visual aids:

  • Sun glasses.
  • Replacement glasses.
  • Reading glasses.
  • Contact lenses.
  • Swimming goggles.

Health and personal hygiene:

  • Bug spray or lotion.
  • Travel pharmacy in consultation with your doctor and pharmacist.
  • Oropax.
  • Tweezers.
  • Disinfectant spray.
  • Sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 30 for the high altitudes and sunny weather (very expensive in Mexico !!).
  • Band aids.
  • Handkerchiefs.
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss.
  • Adhesive cream, cleaning tabs (dentures).
  • Comb, brush.
  • Hair dryer with adapter (flat, 110 V).
  • Shampoo and conditioner.
  • Shaver with adapter (flat, 110 V).
  • Wet razor and shaving cream.
  • Cotton swabs / cotton pads.
  • Moisturizer.
  • Nail care (toiletry bag).
  • Special soaps.
  • Shower gel.
  • Make-up.
  • Washcloth.
  • Condoms / pill.
  • Tampons, pads.

Other useful travel accessories:

  • Flashlight (especially during the rainy season the power fails sometimes in Mexico).
  • Small pocket knife (carry in a suitcase and not in your carry on luggage or purse).
  • Travel alarm clock.
  • Watch.
  • Gel sanitizer.
  • Sewing kit.
  • Binoculars.
  • Functional towels for tours.

Packing list for Mexico active trips and volcanic ascents:

  • Sturdy and previously tested footwear.
  • Functional underwear.
  • Sunscreen with a high sun protection factor of at least 50.
  • Fleece sweater.
  • Hat or ear protection.
  • Gloves.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket (check temperatures beforehand).
  • Sunglasses with high UV protection.
  • Small and comfortable backpack for the climb, preferably with a water tank.
  • Sleeping bag and sleeping mat for overnight in a tent or base camp (please ask beforehand).
  • Walking sticks as needed.
