On this Mexico Tour Module immerse yourself in the world of the Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Frida´s famous self portraits were influenced by her tragic destiny and her marriage to Diego Rivera. He is one of the most famous Mexican painters and has gained worldwide recognition for his beautiful and sometimes controversial murals. During your trip you will visit their most impressive pieces of art and the house where they lived and worked.
According to your time of arrival you are picked up from the airport or bus station in Mexico City and brought to your hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: none)
You will be picked up from your hotel and taken 50km northeast of the city to the spectacular site of Teotihuacán which was the basis for Frida and Diegos’ work. You definitely should not miss out on climbing up the Sun and Moon Pyramids, as they provide an imposing view of the extent of this archaeological excavation. After exploring these impressive ruins you will be taken to the Basílica de Guadalupe. This is Mexico’s most important pilgrimage site and is famous for its image of the Virgin de Guadalupe. Admire the intricate gold decorations inside the Basilica. Afterwards, you will be brought back to your hotel in Mexico City. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)
After breakfast, head towards the Zócalo which is a symbol of power and at the same time the “heart” of the country. Continue to the National Palace and discover the main attraction in the galleries: Diego Rivera’s murals which display the history of Mexico and where the artist worked for many years. Afterwards, continue to the school where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera met for the first time and to the Ministry of Education where you will find some of Diego Rivera´s most beautiful mural paintings. After lunch, visit the Museo Nacional de Arte to see more pieces by Mexico´s most famous artistic couple. After breakfast, you will spend the day following the footsteps of Frida Kahlo. In Coyoacán, one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Mexico City, visit the birthplace and childhood home of Frida Kahlo. Later it was where the artistic couple lived and worked and is now a museum known as the “Casa Azul”. There are still objects such as draft sketches, old paintbrushes and furniture to find. You continue to the Leon Trotsky Museum who was a long time friend and intellectual ally of the couple and who lived with them upon his asylum in Mexico. Afterwards, you continue to the main square of Coyoacan before continuing to the Dolores Olmedo Museum. Explore numerous examples of Frida’s work and a large collection of Diego´s paintings as well as a stroll through the garden filled with peacocks and xoloitzcuintle (mexican hairless) dogs. The private museum “Anahuacalli”, which Diego Rivera founded after Frida’s death, will conclude this perfect day dedicated to Frida Kahlo. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)
After a leisurely breakfast, explore the neighbourhood of San Angel. Along the way, you will stop at the UNAM, National University of Mexico, where you can admire works of Diego’s student O’Goman as well as works of Diego Rivera himself at the Olympic Stadium. Visit Diego Rivera’s workshop which is now an art gallery and cultural center housing his private art collection. Afterwards, visit the Anthropological Museum, where you can learn all about the many prehispanic cultures in México. Before returning to the hotel, enjoy a stroll through the Chapultepec Park, the “green lung” of the city with many cultural centers, museums, a zoo and the famous Chapultepec Castle. Overnight stay.
