Eco Tour Volando con Guacas – Tour Module

This Mexico Tour Module is aimed primarily at nature lovers and photography enthusiasts who are interested in observing the rare parrot species of the Aras militaris mexicanus in the Sierra Gorda and thus want to contribute to preserving this endangered species of macaws.

Day 1
Querétaro – Santa María de Cocos – Sótano el Barro

You will be picked up from your hotel in Querétaro in the early morning at 6 am and set off for the Sierra Gorda (breakfast box included). On the way there, you will cross different micro-climatic zones. Around noon you will reach the small community of Santa María de los Cocos, which is located at the foot of Sótano el Barro at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters. There you will be welcomed by the villagers and enjoy a lovingly prepared lunch (included), which consists of tacos de nopal (tacos with cactus), eggs and chicken (vegetarian options available). With a full stomach and a happy heart, you will be introduced to the world of the Aras militaris mexicanus. Members of the Volando con Guacas project explain why these wonderful animals are in danger, what makes Sótano el Barro a habitat for the macaws and how the village and the community are integrated into the project. There is also an introduction to the world of photography by a professional photographer. You will also learn about how to behave in the biosphere reserve and all safety precautions. Afterwards, the village community will help you load your luggage onto the donkeys, so that they can easily take a small hiking backpack and make their way to Sótano el Barro.

A 2-3 hour hike through beautiful forests full of oak and pine trees awaits you in a completely untouched landscape. Hike the small path with your guides who explain the local flora and fauna and of course you have the opportunity to take photos of the surroundings.

In the evening you reach the camp, where you set up your tent and enjoy your dinner (included) under the starry sky with a cozy campfire. If the climate permits, you can enjoy a night photography course.

Please note that it is untouched nature and there are no sanitary facilities available. Overnight in a tent. (Meals: Breakfast lunch box, lunch and dinner on the way)

Day 2
Sótano el Barro – Misión Conca

Start this magical day at dawn with a light breakfast (included) prepared by the village community. Then make your way to the viewpoint, which is about 15 minutes from the camp, where you can admire one of the last populations of the Aras militaris mexicanus. Observe how these wonderful macaws are foraging in the morning and starting their day. It is a unique spectacle that you shouldn’t miss. With the camera you can try to capture this magical view and impression. Return to the camp around 11 a.m. and have lunch (included) to share your morning experiences and observations. Then it’s time to say goodbye, clean up the camp and load the donkeys for the descent. After a 2-hour hike, you will return to Santa Maria de Cocos, where a transfer to the hotel is already waiting for you. The evening is at your leisure. Relax in the hotel swimming pool or enjoy a massage (not included) after the hike. Overnight at hotel. (Meals: breakfast and lunch on the way)
