On this Mexico Active Tour you will make a very special and challenging experience as you will climb the highest volcano and at the same time the highest mountain in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba. This volcano which is also called Citlaltépetl, after the aztec language Nahuatl is located between the states of Veracruz and Puebla. It has an altitude of 5636 m.
Day 1:
On your first day, your guide, who will accompany you over the next few days, will pick you up at your hotel in Mexico City and head towards the small village of Tlachichuca in the state of Puebla. From there you will continue into the National Park “Pico de Orizaba” to your rustic base camp “Piedra Grande”. This is located at the foot of the volcano at an altitude of approximately 4200 m. Enjoy a delicious dinner (included) and spend your first night in shared rooms or, depending on availability, in a comfortable 4-season tent.
Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast (included) you will start the day. To ensure that you are ready for the climb to the summit of the impressive Pico de Orizaba, you will enjoy a more challenging acclimatization hike. This leads you to the “Cruces de Monterrey” at about 4,800 m altitude. Here you will also have a light lunch (included) and rest while admiring the views. Afterwards, you will hike back to base camp where you will have an early dinner (included), do an equipment check, and by 8:00 pm go to bed. You will need to get a good night’s sleep before tomorrow’s climb.

Day 3:
Today, you will be awakened at about 00:00 am in the morning to begin the ascent of the Pico de Orizaba. During the ascent, the breathtaking panorama views compensate for your effort, but the real highlight is when you reach the top. The elliptical opening of the volcano is 478 m at its widest point in diameter and has a depth of about 300 m. The view down the volcano is an experience that you will not easily forget. Enjoy some time to rest, explore the summit and be filled with the satisfaction of completing such a rigorous climb. Afterwards, you will begin the descent and taken to Tlachichuca, where you will spend the night in a small cozy accommodation.

Day 4:
After breakfast (included) you are depending on the rest of your vacation brought back to your hotel, the bus station or the airport in Mexico City.
Important information:
We only recommend taking this tour if you are in very good physical and health condition. The ascent is classified with a medium level of difficulty and mountain climbing as well as experience with crampons is necessary.
