On this Mexico daytrip you hike through a beautiful landscape from Latuvi to Amatlán and get to know some of the Pueblos Mancomunados of the Sierra Norte.
In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel in Oaxaca and your tour will begin in the mountains of the Sierra Norte. After approximately 1 1/2 hours you will reach the remote mountain village of Latuvi. Latuvi is part of the Pueblos Mancomunados, six Zapotec villages dedicated to ecotourism. Here you will begin the day’s hike. Via an old trade trail, the “Camino Real”, you will hike to Amatlán, one of the oldest villages of the Pueblos Mancomunados. In pre-hispanic times the trade route ran from the Gulf coast to the central valley of Oaxaca. Hike along a small river and through oak forests full of lichens and moss. Depending on the time of the year, you will also find wild orchids. After 14 km and an approximately 5-hour hike you will reach Santa Catarina Lachatao and San Miguel Amatlán, the two villages of Pueblos Mancomunados. Strengthen yourself with a late lunch (included) and chat with the locals. Afterwards, you will be brought back to your hotel in Oaxaca.
