On this 14-day Mexico Car Rental Tour you explore the mystic world of the Maya at your own pace. Aside of the well-known archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal you explore also the secrets and hidden spots of the Yucatán such as Cacchoben, Celestún, the cenote Suytun or the cenotes of Cuzamá.

Day 1
Airport Cancún – Xpu Ha

After arriving in Cancún, please pick up your luggage and go directly to the Rental Car Desk within the airport. They will arrange your transport to the Rental Car office where you will pick up your rental car. With the keys in your hand, you are off on your Yucatán adventure and can drive to your beach hotel on the Rivera Maya. Relax on the beach after a long day of travel and let your worries fade away with the sound of the waves. Overnight stay. (Meals: none)

Day 2
Tulum – Cenote Dos Ojos – Xpu Ha

Today, stop at the unique ruins of Tulum. This archaeological site is located on a cliff overlooking the turquoise ocean below. Explore the many ruins and afterwards relax and soak up the warm Mexican sun on the beach below where you can take a refreshing dip in the ocean. Continue to the Cenote Dos Ojos which is a unique natural phenomenon found in the region. These underground rivers and caves were very important to Maya tradition and culture and have a mysterious atmosphere. Admire the stalactites and stalagmites overhead while swimming in the clear water. End the day at the beautiful hotel Serenity, a unique luxury glamping experience. Nowhere else on the Riviera Maya will you find sand as soft and white or a sea that shimmers as turquoise as in Xpu Ha. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Day 3
Akumal – Yalku Laguna – Naturpark Aktun Chen – Tulum – Bacalar

Today, visit the nearby beach of Akumal where there is a sea turtle conservation center and where you can find sea turtles year round due to the abundant sea grass. Here, you can snorkel on the reef right from the beach. Explore the underwater world of tropical fish, coral and sea turtles. If you are lucky you may even see some babies making their way to the ocean (July-August is hatching season). Continue to the Yal Ku Laguna (Paradise Lagoon) which is an open air cenote filled with marine life. Enjoy some time swimming and snorkelling in the pristine nature. Afterwards, head to the Aktun Chen Nature Park where you can combine adrenaline and nature while using ziplines, exploring underground river systems and caves.

Afterwards, you head to Tulum where you can enjoy the white sandy beaches. Explore the small bohemian beach town filled with small shops and cafes. In the afternoon, continue to your hotel on the pristine Bacalar lagoon far away from the masses of tourists on the Riviera Maya. After arriving enjoy a delicious dinner of fresh seafood from a local restaurant and enjoy the beautiful sunset from a hammock overlooking the lagoon. Overnight. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Day 4
Bacalar

Enjoy a relaxing day on the beautiful beach of the Bacalar lagoon. If you wish, you can snorkel, swim or take a mud bath. You can also rent a kayak or a stand up board to explore the lagoon. In the afternoon you should go and explore the little town with its nice fortress „San Felipe“. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Day 5
Bacalar

Today, meet your captain on the pier of Rancho Encantado for an exciting boat tour of the Lagoon. We don´t want to give away too much, but you will have the opportunity to admire the local flora and fauna of the freshwater lagoon. Many bird and reptile species are native to this region due to the unique ecosystem. You will explore a unique cenote and don´t miss out on the mud bath! Afterwards, you will be returned to the pier and can enjoy the rest of the day at the hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Day 6
Bacalar – Cacchoben – Uxmal

After breakfast, visit the archaeological site of Chacchoben which was an important trade link between Maya cities on the Yucatan Peninsula. Far away from the masses of tourists at other sites, these ruins have a mysterious atmosphere and can be explored uninterupted. Continue to your jungle hotel beside the archaeological site of Uxmal. Day 7
Uxmal – Choco-Story Museum – Celestún

After breakfast, visit the archaeological site of Uxmal, which is the Yucatan’s most important archeological excavation, apart from Chichén Itzá. The architecture of Uxmal is an example of that present in the Puuc region. The temples have smooth low walls which represent traditional Maya huts and many figures of the rain god Chaac. Afterwards, stop at the uniquely interactive Choco-story Museum beside the archaeological site of Uxmal. Cacao was an important ingredient for the Maya culture and this museum celebrates the history and uses of this delicious ingredient. Enjoy a sample of the traditional chocolate drink as well as a Maya ceremony led by a local Sack´be. Continue to the remote Xixim Unique Maya Hotel on an isolated stretch of pristine beach far away from civilization. Day 8
Celestún

Today will be a day of pure nature and relaxation. In the morning, head to Celestún Beach where you can observe one of the most extensive flamingo colonies during a boat trip (not included) through the unique mangrove swamps. Enjoy your free afternoon to take a stroll and experience the amazing flora and fauna, relax on the beautiful beach or let one of the famous restaurants spoil you with delicious seafood. Day 9
Celestún – Mérida

After breakfast, continue to the charming colonial town of Mérida. Use the rest of the day to explore the enchanting colonial city on your own. Mérida is a quiet paradise. The peacefulness of the town and the beauty of its streets, make it a place of elegance and contrast amid its colonial houses, Mayan ruins, and architecture. Its food, layered with exquisite gastronomic heritage, will take over your taste buds. The Plaza Mayor is a vibrant meeting place where locals enjoy traditional drinks, such as champola or sorbet.

Alternatively, we recommend our optional cooking class or the street food tour to enjoy the culinary delights of Yucatan.

Day 10
Cenotes de Cuzamá – Mérida

Today, you can enjoy a visit to a series of local cenotes. Upon your arrival you will be taken on a horse drawn carriage to three cenotes. To get there you are taken on a small platform pulled by a horse along old railway tracks which has been modernized for your comfort and now has seating. Originally, it used to transport the henequen plant from the field to the machine house for processing. You will be taken through the jungle on this fun adventure and can stop for a refreshing dip in each of the cenotes. You have 30 minutes at each cenote to swim and the total journey lasts approximately 3 hours in total. Afterwards, return to your hotel in Mérida. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Mérida – Chichén Itzá – Cenote Suytun – Chiquilá – Holbox

After breakfast, make your way to the world famous archaeological site of Chichén Itzá. In 1988, the ancient Mayan city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 2007 declared one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Let yourself be fascinated by the imposing, architecturally impressive buildings of the Mayas and admire, among other things, the famous pyramid of Kukulcán, which as a whole is a calendar turned to stone, and the huge ball court. Afterwards, continue to the cenote Suytun, where you can take a refreshing bath in the bright blue water of this unique natural phenomenon. Finally, head to the pier in Chiquilá where you can leave the rental car in an overnight parking lot  (not included). Purchase your ticket and take the ferry over to Holbox on your own. Upon arrival on the island, take a golfcart taxi  (not included) to your beach hotel. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Holbox

Enjoy today the next week on the spectacular beaches of the small, car-free island of Holbox. It is a natural paradise with white sandy beaches, turquoise water, mangroves and it is also known for its spectacular sunsets. Rent a bike, ride a horse, snorkel with whale sharks (may-sept) or take a boat trip to the surrounding little islands and lagoons. Stroll through the colorful downtown and enjoy some delicious seafood fresh from the ocean or just relax in a hammock and let your mind wander. Overnight stay. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Holbox – Chiquilá – Airport Cancún

According to your departure time you take an Island taxi (Golf cart) and are brought to the port. Here you will buy your ferry tickets and take the ferry to Chiquilá by yourself. Upon arrival you will pick up your car again and continue to the Cancún airport where you will return your rental car. Please ask there for a free transport to your departure Terminal. (Meals: breakfast at the hotel)

Important information:
  • We reserve the right to make any amendments to the itinerary as long as the amendments are not essential to the rest of the tour.
  • Please note that the Rental Car agreement is a contract between the renter and the rental car company. Buenos Días Mexico acts solely as a Travel Agent and cannot guarantee short term changes on the part of the service provider nor do they assume responsibility for damages. Please check the emergency numbers which are on your contract signed with the rental car company in case of accidents.
  • Since The rental car company charges a security deposit for each car rental which increases depending on category (600-2500 USD approx), usually 10% of the car value. A credit card is needed with a validity of at least one year and a sufficient limit to cover this deposit.
  • The rental car needs to be returned to the rental car offices as specified in the itinerary. It is not possible to leave the rental car at the hotel. Upon request the rental car company may offer a transfer to the hotel once the rental car is returned. This transfer cannot be guaranteed as it depends on the availability of the company shuttle.
  • All distance is approximated and Buenos Dias Mexico assumes no liability.
  • GPS systems and baby seats cannot be confirmed in advance and are subject to availability when the vehicle is picked up.
  • Hotel selection is subject to availability. If the aforementioned accommodations are fully booked or over booked, Buenos Dias Mexico reserves the right to replace them with equivalent hotels.
  • All of the hotels will be booked in a country specific category which does not always correspond to the international standard. Please note that there is no official hotel certification system in Mexico.
  • Please note that the price of the hotel category corresponds to a 3 star hotel (standard). On request we can also book a 4 bw hotel for you. 5 star category.
  • Small group travel: Please keep in mind that day trips with small groups often requires patience and understanding, because every group has a certain dynamic. Sometimes the group stops at souvenir shops and markets.
  • High Season Travelling (Christmas / New Year’s and Easter holidays): Travelling in Mexico during high seasons presents some exceptional conditions. This means that there may be delays, overbookings and longer waiting times at museums or archaeological sites. We try our best to assure that all services are carried out as confirmed but especially in the states of Chiapas and Yucatan small groups can sometimes convert to larger groups. We kindly ask you for your understanding.
